Abstract: During the last few years research in Theoretical Computer Sciencehas focused on a new and exciting field under the general title:applications of Game Theory in Computer Science. This diplomathesis provides an overview on the so-called Mechanism Design orImplementation Theory, which uses Game Theory as a tool to solveproblems of selfish agents in decentralized environments.Specifically, we investigate the problem of finding the bestallocation of given resources to selfish agents using auctions. Each agent wants to obtain a subset of the resources, for which itis willing to spend up to an amount of monetary units. The problemis NP-complete and we present a number of ways to overcome thisdifficulty. Moreover, we present the problem of sharing the cost of multicasttransmissions. The root of a given tree network provides contentto the agents-clients, that are located on the leaves of theprevious tree. It is required to find a way to share the cost ofeach transmission, which satisfies specific properties.
