Abstract: Ivestigate the use of a custom made cylindrical capacitor as a sensor, constructed from two concentric copper pipes. The varying dielectric constant of the liquid placed between the two pipes of the capacitor and the resulting change in the capacitance will be the basis of the measurements taken. The various circuits that are necessary for the sensor's operation and which will interwork with it will also be studied. This analysis will determine which circuits are most suited to the required specifications and it will also determine which ones yield optimum results. A microcontroller will be used to control these circuits, and to collect and display the output from the sensor. Finally, the actual characteristics of the capacitor will be analyzed to determine how the measurements taken compare to the theoretical values calculated. Any discrepancies found will be explained and possible improvements, if any, will be suggested. In conclusion, several sample applications of such a type of sensor coupled with a microcontroller will be discussed.
