Abstract: The goal of this thesis is the study of the Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm in the context ofefficient network planning and also the development of a Geographic Information System as an aidfor the visualization and management of spatial data and results which will be part of theoptimization process. The term efficient network planning in the present document refers to thedetermination and use of various techniques and modifications of the original PSO algorithm,which will allow for fast proposition of network topologies, based on a predefined set of nodes,each with a specific spatial position and broadband requirements. Our purpose is to minimize thecost of construction for the ultimately proposed network topology.Chapter 1 is a brief introduction to the role of communication networks in modern societies, thusproviding evidence of the importance of the particular problem and the significance of finding anacceptable solution to it. In Chapter 2 we proceed to introduce the concept of GeographicInformation Systems, which will act as the platform whose properties the proposed optimizationtechniques will later exploit. Chapter 3 provides the specifications and model of the actual GIS thathas been developed for our purposes, while in Chapter 4 we refer to various concepts ofoptimization and extensively study Particle Swarm Optimization, proposing specific modificationsof the basic algorithm and presenting the results of our study.
